Charging Points

The 1,000 charging points currently being installed will be a mix of standard and quick charging points. Different types of charging points will be installed in different sorts of locations across North East England.

Standard Charging Points

Purpose: Standard chargers provide charging in public locations and places of work. They are the preferred option when speed of recharge is not the priority and provide a balance between cost and convenience for the host and user.

Ideal locations:

  • Public locations such as shopping centres, supermarkets etc
  • On street & off street including car parks
  • Each Charging point requires a single phase 32A 240V supply

Figures:

  • Cost of equipment: circa £2,500
  • Cost of installation: circa £2,500
  • Cost of maintenance: approx £50 per year
  • Cost per full charge (for a Nissan LEAF that has a capacity of 24kWh) ~ 10p x 24kW = £2.40
  • Time to full charge: 3kw standard charger – 8 hours and 7kw standard charger – 4 hours

The Charge your Car programme is currently providing a 50% grant towards the purchase and installation of Standard Charging posts, find out more on our funding page.

Quick Charging Points

Purpose: Quick chargers are attractive to drivers undertaking a longer trip and at times when a quick charge is needed to extend the range of the trip. They will be used just like existing fuel pumps and are likely to be placed at key locations:

  • Sited on or near main spine roads in supervised locations such as A19, A1, A66, A68, A69
  • With sufficient electrical capacity
  • Publicly accessible
  • Requires a 3 phase 100A 415V supply

Figures:

  • Cost of equipment: circa £25,000
  • Cost of installation: circa £15,000
  • Cost of maintenance: TBA
  • Cost per full charge (for a Nissan Leaf that has a capacity of 24kWh) ~    10p x 24kW = £2.40
  • Charge time: 80% Charge in 20/25 mins

The Charge your Car programme is currently providing a 100% grant towards the purchase and installation of Quick Charging posts, find out more on our funding page.
